The Special Education Department

The Special Education Department is in place to provide additional services, support, adapted programs, specialized placements, or environments to ensure that all students' educational needs are addressed.

Its purpose is to provide appropriate instruction in the least restrictive environment so all students may have equal access to the curriculum. We acknowledge each individual as a lifelong learner and contributing member of our world.

We envision our students as a part of a collaborative learning community where teachers and students work together and support each other searching for understanding, solutions, and meanings.

We create specific documentations and forms to support our students learning and development. These documentations are focused on establishing and describing the appropriate goals and learning environment focused on the students‚Äô areas of strengths and weaknesses. We create Academic Accommodation Plan (AAP), which is an Intervention plan for students with a diagnosed disability that does not require special education.  This plan describes the modification and accommodations that must take place to support his learning. We also create Individualized Education Plan (IEP)  for students with a diagnosed disability which outlines measurable goals, objectives, strategies, and specific services.

Services provided include: Pull-out, push-in interventions to work with students who demonstrate to be struggling through the curricula. Specific interventions are planned to attend their individual needs. The specialist meets individually with the teachers, as needed, to help them modify and accommodate their lesson plans and find appropriate materials. The Special Education department, along with the psychologist and counselor, meet on a monthly basis with classroom teachers to discuss student concerns and progress. Parent meetings are held on a constant basis to follow up and share student progress and development at home and at school.
