Diversity

The School community is culturally and internationally diverse with 24 nations represented. Most student families are from the Dominican Republic, followed by Spain, the United States, and Venezuela. Approximately 90% of CCHS students live in dual parent households where two or more languages are spoken. Spanish is most often spoken, followed by English. Tourism and related support industries are the primary employers in the community.

Inclusion

As part of its community outreach, Cap Cana Heritage School offers full tuition scholarships to children of CCHS faculty and administrative employees.  Other tuition discounts are offered to children of Cap Cana employees and children from the community. Of the 272 enrolled CCHS students, approximately 15% receive tuition assistance.

Curriculum

The School embraces a Constructivist Theory approach to learning. Critical thinking and scientific inquiry are utilized to provide students with strategies for academic success and a desire for lifelong learning. Classes are taught in English, with the exception of the Dominican Ministry of Education required courses: ‚ÄúFrench, Sociales y Civica‚Äù and ‚ÄúSpanish Language Arts.‚Äù Since fall 2009, the academic program for middle and high school has been organized on a block schedule Tuesday through Friday.  All classes except French and electives meet twice a week for 90 minute blocks and a 50 minute class period on Mondays for the entire school year.  French and electives meet only for a semester and meet for one 90 minute block and a 50 minute class period on Mondays. Students are graded on the following scale: 90-100 A; 80-89 B; 75-79 C; 70-74 D; 69 and below F.

Special Programs: Entrance exams in Math, English, and Spanish assess competency levels of incoming students. Students may be placed in the after-school English and Spanish as a Second Language Program, and/or the Math Skills Development Program. ESL and SOL teachers assist students who have limited English or Spanish. CCHS offers special education services where individual learning plans are tailored for students with special needs. Teachers, counselor, psychologist and assistant teachers work with the Student Support Team to develop a rich learning program for student growth and development.

Assessments

At CCHS, assessment is an ongoing process that measures both teaching and learning. In preschool through 2nd grade, learning is measured through student progress and skill level on a trimester schedule. In 3rd through 8th grades, a percentage based grading system reflects student performance, application, and achievement. In grades 9-12, students are graded in two independent semesters using a percentage system based on the Carnegie Credit System.
In addition to internal assessments, the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test in the areas of Language Arts and Mathematics are given three times per academic year in grades 2-12. These internationally recognized assessments ensure that student learning readiness and achievement reflect the parameters of the CCHS standards based curriculum. Eighth grade students must pass national exams in the core curriculum in order to enter 9th grade. High school students take compulsory national exams at the end of the academic year in order to graduate from high school.

Extracurricular Activities

CCHS has an active after school and extended day program for students in Nursery - 12th grade. These include: psychomotor skills development, soccer, judo, tennis, dance, violin, swimming, and volleyball. Lifelong Learning: CCHS’ sister institution Universidad Iberomericana (UNIBE) has a Cap Cana Campus. This unique alignment permits teachers, parents, and community members to expand their professional development through credit courses and workshops. Both the School and University offer student and community programs that span the continuum of teaching and learning from Birth to Post Graduate university programs.
